Taking the Long View - 8/31/202
I had a fantastic day yesterday. Certainly got me out of my exhausted jetlag from Dublin. OpenAI hosted a day-long roundtable at the Bipartisan Policy Center to discuss AI and elections. Not only is it one of my favorite topics, but I got to see so many of my smart friends who are working in this space. We have a lot of tricky questions to tackle, but I’m really glad it’s this group of people helping to do so.
There is lots of new stuff on the calendar, as my friends at Duco Experts let me know about a few more election dates that had been set. We also have a new referendum in Australia and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer hosting tech CEOs for an event on AI in September.
Meta also responded to the Oversight Board’s recommendation on whether or not the Cambodian Prime Minister should be kicked off the platform. They are not doing so because it “would not be consistent with our policies, including our protocol on restricting accounts of public figures during civil unrest.”
Have a great rest of your day, and start of the long weekend if you are in the States. I’ll be heading to the Eastern Shore to catch up on work mostly, but I also plan on exploring Easton and hopefully catching some crabs.
