Facebook was one platform, but users, advertisers, political campaigns, media organizations, governments, and countless others each discovered what it could do for them. AI is now going through the same process. A developer sees a model, a company sees productivity, a student sees a learning tool, a writer sees an editor—and someone else will inevitably see an entirely different opportunity.
The technology may be the same, but each participant pulls its use toward what benefits them. The Self-Interest Principle makes the final form of a technology something no single creator fully determines.
Maybe that is why we so often understand a technology only after we are already living with its consequences.
